Burchy and Big Guy
Burchy and I are born and raised Okies who traded the winds sweeping down the plains for ocean breezes blowing onto the white sandy beaches of Pensacola, Florida.
Burchy grew up on 5 acres in Mustang, Oklahoma while I was raised as a “city boy” in Oklahoma City. We both found success in the athletic arena, each celebrating state championships in high school for softball and baseball, respectively. Our paths finally crossed in 1992 at Grand Slam USA, an indoor hitting facility, where she was a college softball pitcher and I was an aspiring minor leaguer in the Twins organization trying to get to “the show.” Upon the conclusion of our playing careers, we got married and both ended up in education. Burchy spent the last 26 years in the elementary classroom and starting year 27 decided to make the jump to Tate high school teaching sophomore reading. I am also starting year 27 as a high school math teacher and baseball coach at Tate.
We have been blessed with raising two boys that have provided us years of joy and learning opportunities. Now young men with their own individual strengths and talents, they both have found success in the classroom and on the athletic field.
As a family, we have accumulated a number of experiences that have led to many “wins” and “losses” on and off the field in this game we call life. Our purpose in creating this blog is to share our experiences and insights with those who find themselves in similar situations of teaching, parenting, and coaching young athletes.
We are so glad that you have taken the time to read about our journey.
Play ball,
Burchy and Big Guy
